Solar charge controllers are a particularly important component in an Off Grid PV system. They are responsible for mainly regulating power generated from PV array and safely charging the battery. and Other important functions of a solar charge controller may include preventing reverse current flow into PV array at night (from battery), compensating battery voltage due to temperature, and managing lighting controls. Solar charge controllers are rated in terms of the output charging current (A) that they can provide to batteries
MPPT controllers use a brand new technology, Maximum Power Point Tracking, to safely and successfully charge batteries. In principle, controllers with MPPT functionality will target the highest output possible from array and convert the excess voltage into higher charging amperage. On average MPPT controllers can typically generate 20 to 30% more power output from array in comparison to their PWM counterparts. Despite costing more than PWM controllers, the higher efficiency of MPPT controllers is well worth the cost.
The solar controller we use can be found on the link below a PCM8048, MPP Solar are easy to contact ( peggy@mppsolar.com )and have a support crew happy to help with any questions or problems. Replacement parts are readily available and if needed, units can be repaired by the manufacture. I have had this unit inspected by an electronics technician and he was impressed with the manufacture quality of the PCM8048 we purchased. This controller can be used on 12vdc, 24vdc and 48vdc systems so you can upgrade your system without costs for a new controller.
The solar controller converts the power from the solar panels, 96volts dc @ 64 amps, to the battery bank, 48 volt dc - 400 amp hours.
